A Very Still Life in Black and White, 2020

Black and white foamcore in a gilded frame rescued from recycling at Michaels.
24” x 18”

Simplify, simplify. The stillest of still lives. The deadest of nature morte. First, all colors found in nature . . . gone. Then we stripped out all 3 dimensional aspects. Fun design challenge. Had to invent my own rules to play this game.

For as long as foam core has be around architects have been making models with it. As have i used it for prototypes. See Brawlroom model.

Lately i’ve been enjoying using this material for doing the final version of various works. The challenge is huge. The material is somewhat strong but it’s still paper and white. And one thumbprint can ruin a weeks worth of carving.

We call this on going series “Paper Cuts." And yes, they are an occupational hazard.
