Artist Statement
Like most artists, I try to stay open to, and curious about, the world around us in daily life.
Many times I will be drawn to cultural artifacts that have been orphaned and tossed aside, but who’s beauty and place in the world can still be appreciated.
Often this can only happen after giving the art a title that points out a new context to consider them. And maybe surprise the viewer and cause them to reconsider these artifacts. And reconsider other things around them from a different angle. What could be Vs What we’ve always thought before.
Found objects I’ve come to love and appreciate include spent shot gun shells, used wine corks, old light bulbs, light fixtures, dryer lint, empty boxes, dominos and rope. Placing these formerly lost souls in new refined context makes a meaningful contrast and shows that maybe they deserve respect and a second look. At least by me! Assembled with care and respect, everyday artifacts may take on new properties and meaning. Does that make us multi disciplinary in a multi media world? We are fine with that.
Beyond found objects, my body of work often includes (but is not limited to) wood, plaster, resin, foamcore, and a sense of humor. I like to craft and finish the art as meticulously as our talents will allow, but not take ourselves too seriously in the process.
If I can add to anyone’s pursuit of happiness or delight, even for a moment, I will put that in life’s Win Column.
As Jerry Saltz’s book title rightly says ART IS LIFE. And sometimes, LIFE IS ART. We just have to be open to it.
